What is PDT Treatment?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that uses light-sensitive drugs and a specific type of light to treat various skin conditions. The process involves applying a photosensitizing agent to the skin, which is then activated by light of a certain wavelength. This activation leads to a chemical reaction that destroys abnormal cells or tissues.

PDT is commonly used to treat acne, precancerous skin lesions, and certain types of skin cancer. It is also utilized in cosmetic procedures for skin rejuvenation and reducing signs of aging. The treatment is valued for its ability to target specific areas without affecting the surrounding healthy skin.

What can Pdt Treatment target?

Initial Consultation

During Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), the area to be treated is first cleansed, and a photosensitizing agent is applied to the skin. This agent needs time to be absorbed by the target cells, which can range from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the specific condition and protocol. After this period, a specialized light source is used to activate the photosensitizer. The light treatment is usually well-tolerated, but some patients may experience a mild stinging or tingling sensation. Protective eyewear is often provided to shield your eyes from the light.

After PDT Treatment

After the treatment, your skin might look red and feel tender, akin to a mild sunburn. Some peeling or crusting can occur as the skin heals, which generally subsides within a week. It's essential to avoid direct sun exposure and use a high-SPF sunscreen to protect the treated area. Moisturizers and gentle skincare products are recommended to aid in healing and reduce discomfort. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor progress and assess the results.
